Autumn was here... Her favorite time of the year. Zephyr perched on a mighty branch of a redwood tree,
content at the breath-taking view that lay before her. The afternoon breeze swept along the sea of golden
and red leaves, and she could smell the scents of the forest as it reached her, making her ebony black tresses
flow behind her like a wave. There was nothing else in the world that she loved more than the feeling of being free.
To be up high in the sky where only winged beasts could reach her, to soar through the clouds and be carried
by the wind, to feel one with the sky... To Zephyr, this was life. A day without messages to be delivered
to this tribe from that tribe would always be a glorious day. Adventures awaited this harpy from every corner,
and there was so much to be seen and heard. If only she could travel farther than the territories she already knew by heart...
Taking a deep breath, she released a loud call that resembled a hawk's, making a flock of birds from the distance retreat.
With a howl of laughter, she shot herself towards the escaping flock and dove downwards to perch in the tree
that served as their refuge. Much to her dismay, she didn't realize right away that it was a young birch tree.
It was too late. Once she landed on a branch, it snapped from trying to support her weight, and Zephyr was
almost instantly caught off balance. Her clawed feet tried to grab onto another branch but when she did, it
snapped in two like the first one she landed on. Orange and yellow leaves fell everywhere and she didn't know
where she was hitting anymore.
Finally, before things could go worse, she managed to cling onto the trunk of the tree. "That... Was stupid,"
she panted, rolling her eyes and wanting to kick herself for doing something so carelessly.
Annoyed, she dislodged herself from the trunk and landed clumsily on her feet. While she ruffled her feathers to
rid them of leaves and twigs, a rustling sound echoed from the bushes behind her. With a small yelp, she twisted
around and glared at the source of the noise. "Who's there?" she asked, still trying to regain her composure.
How embarrassing it would be if someone actually saw a harpy 'fall' from the sky.
